SUMMARY:Refining Learning Goals: Collaborative Workshop for Course Design
DESCRIPTION:
Overview

This workshop is designed to support faculty in refining learning goals using the Backward Design framework for course development. Fellows will engage in a critical review of measurable, outcome-oriented goals and participate in a peer feedback process to enhance alignment with their course objectives. Through collaborative discussions, fellows will examine shared challenges, exchange constructive insights, and develop advanced strategies for goal articulation. By the session's conclusion, each fellow will have refined their goals to more effectively guide their course design and pedagogical approach.

To Do

Pre-Meeting Preparation:

As part of your summer work, you began drafting learning goals for your course design. To make the most of our time together, please complete the following before the meeting:

Draft Your Learning Goals:
Bring a draft of your learning goals to the meeting. Alternatively, feel free to send your draft ahead of time, and we will compile these for all fellows to review and workshop collectively. Aiming to use action verbs in your goals will aid in aligning them with assessment.

Reflect on Your Design Engagement:
Think about what you most hope to achieve through this fellowship—whether it’s transforming learning goals into effective activities, exploring new teaching strategies, or experimenting with innovative assessments. Be ready to discuss these needs and aspirations with the group.

Meeting Agenda:

Review of the Backward Design Process and Learning Goals:
We'll start with a brief refresher to align us on key concepts and approaches.

Peer Review and Collaboration:
Fellows will pair up to review each other’s learning goals, providing an opportunity to compare, revise, and collaboratively address any challenges.

Group Discussion:
Coming together as a group, we’ll discuss common themes, share challenges, and provide feedback on the drafted learning goals.

Wrap-Up and Next Steps:
We’ll summarize the key takeaways from our session and outline the path forward.

Preparation Materials:

Please review the suggested readings on Backward Design and Learning Goals shared in Module 1. These resources will provide a solid foundation for our discussions.

Learning Goals

Understand and Apply the Backward Design Process:
By the end of the session, fellows will be able to outline the key components of the Backward Design process and demonstrate its application by refining at least one of their own learning goals based on peer and facilitator feedback.

Develop Clear, Action-Oriented Learning Goals:
Fellows will draft or revise at least three learning goals for their course that include action verbs and are measurable, aligning with their intended course outcomes.

Engage in Collaborative Peer Feedback:
Fellows will actively participate in peer review by giving and receiving constructive feedback on learning goals, with the aim of improving clarity, measurability, and alignment with course objectives.

Identify Personal Course Design Objectives:
Fellows will articulate one or two specific goals they have for their course design process during this fellowship, focusing on areas such as learning activities, teaching methods, or assessment strategies.

Recognize Common Challenges and Solutions in Learning Goal Design:
Through group discussion, fellows will identify at least one common challenge in crafting learning goals and discuss a strategy or adjustment to address it, enhancing their capacity to develop clear, impactful goals.
