Remote Teaching as a Pathway to Innovation -2

To help faculty adapt to the remote learning scenario in the Fall, LInc is offering a series of sessions that complement the FAS training sessions. The goal of the LInc sessions is to demonstrate how to increase interactivity and engagement. The four sessions in each series will focus on four pedagogies:

Lecturing — how to best record lectures, make them interactive even when delivered asynchronously, and free up synchronous time to interact with students
Today’s technology allows for various modes of learning in the remote classroom where feedback and interaction can either happen immediately (synchronous)  or delayed (asynchronous). We discuss the importance of maintaining a balance that is meaningful to your class and introduce different tools and modalities that promote healthy interaction and student engagement in a remote learning environment. Upon completing this session, participants will be able to explain the benefits and challenges of synchronous and asynchronous learning, identify how these modalities can be applied to their own courses, create a framework where all these different modalities are identified, visualized, and evaluated, and apply these techniques using today’s available technology.

Case-based Learning — how to leverage intrinsic motivation by using cases in a virtual classroom.
Case-based learning is a student-centered approach that uses guided inquiry to tackle real-world scenarios. Successful cases integrate knowledge and practice, facilitate engagement and collaboration, and foster intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for learning. Participants will learn the design and implementation elements of successful cases and begin to construct cases for their own course.

Project-based Learning — how to create and support compelling project experiences using opportunities afforded by remote learning.
Student projects are far more than exam replacements; they can serve as powerful learning vehicles throughout a course. Participants will get a taste of what project-based learning looks and feels like online, and take a deeper dive into how to facilitate peer-to-peer learning opportunities and collaboration, scaffold effective teamwork, and provide effective feedback, evaluation, and assessment in a remote-learning environment.

Team-based Learning — how to amplify online engagement with well-designed team activities.
Engaging students and fostering collaboration and community can be challenging, particularly in the virtual classroom. Team-based learning is an instructional strategy that meets these challenges through structured preparation outside of class and collaborative application of knowledge within class. Participants will learn how to strategically form permanent teams, implement readiness assurance activities, incorporate activities in which teams must make discipline-based decisions, and motivate accountability and high-performance team-work.
